We Keep Us Safe: 5 Portraits 5 Activists

Half a decade plus past 2020, when the historic uprisings of the Black Lives Matter Movement played out against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, we find ourselves once again in the midst of a major moment of social unrest. Again the people have united bravely against instruments of state power under the command of the very same individuals as in that time. So-called law enforcement agents continue to commit wanton murder of civilians and escalate actions against immigrant populations to degrees beyond the cruelty of even that moment. The deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good conjure memories of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, with the reminder that in the face of the desperate violence of a hated regime, our solidarity is our strength.
