
Joe Wakeman
Executive Director
Joe Wakeman, Filmmaker, Video Artist, Curator, and Educator, is the Executive Director of
Millennium Film Workshop and has over a decade of hands-on involvement in various NYC film,
art, and music community organizations, including NACG/Film-makers’ Cooperative, MIX Queer
Experimental Film Festival, The Glove, The Kitchen/Haleakala Inc., Spectacle Theater. His work
has been exhibited at MoMA, Chicago Underground Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, The
Film-makers’ Cooperative, Harvestworks Inc., Anthology Film Archives and Roulette
Intermedium. Joe has taught and administered educational filmmaking workshops through
Millennium, and is currently an adjunct professor of Film & Video Lighting and Video Production
at Marymount Manhattan College, and History of Avant-Garde Film and Experimental 16mm
Filmmaking at The New School.


Anton Astudillo
Community Outreach and Development Director
Anton Astudillo (they/he) is a Lenapehoking/New York-based filmmaker and curator working with 16mm film, video, and performance to create moving portraits of personal and political themes, bridging embodied practices and experimental cinema. Astudillo is one of the founders of the AgX Film Collective in Boston (circa 2015) and has taught film production at Massachusetts School of Art and Design, Emerson College and Keene State College. Their work has been included in screenings, exhibitions and festivals at BRIC, MoMA, Ann Arbor Film Festival, IX Festival Dobra Brazil, Mills Gallery BCA, NADA New York, ATA Gallery, MoMA PS1, Anthology Film Archives, WhiteBox, WNDX Festival of Moving Image and Performance Space NY. Astudillo is a 24-25’ BRIC Lab video art fellow working with mentor Deanna Bowen. As an independent curator, Astudillo has programmed at Performance Space New York, Anthology Film Archives, Maysles Documentary Center and international film festivals Go Shorts in the Netherlands and Uppsala Kort in Sweden. In 2023-2024 they were Lead Programmer and Festival Director for the TRANSlations: Seattle Trans Film Festival and from 2023-2025 they served as Program Director at Millennium Film Workshop. Astudillo is a year-round programmer at NewFest, the New York LGBTQ+ Film and Media Organization and is the co-founder of the Trans+ Film Social, a monthly gathering for TGNC artists.
Shelby Smith
Equipment, Rentals, and Membership Manager
Shelby Smith (they/she) is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker and the Equipment, Rentals, and Membership Manager at Millennium Film Workshop. They oversee equipment rentals, memberships, inventory management, and assists with public programming. Shelby has directed, produced, shot, and edited short films screened at the Yule Film Festival, Nantucket Shorts Festival, Critical Mixed-Race Studies Conference, and the Mount Holyoke Film Festival. They also work on independent films and commercial projects as a Production Assistant, as well as in background casting and social media outreach. Shelby’s background in equipment management stems from a commitment to making filmmaking tools and workspaces accessible, supporting artists in creating and sharing their projects with their communities.
