About the event

This July Millennium Film Workshop welcomes esteemed filmmaker Sara Sowell (Milwaukee, WI) to enjoy a two week residency in the workshop, stretching from July 21 through August 3, 2024. Sara will be utilizing our Steenbeck flatbed editing table, splicers, projectors and facilities as her full-service editing suite as she works to complete her new 2-Channel 16mm film, The Individual.

Intended to screen in galleries, museums and film festivals, The Individual (title in progress) is a film displayed as a two-channel 16mm projection, where two hand-built black and white film reels are projected simultaneously side-by-side. Originally conceived as an adaptation of Man Ray's autobiography Self Portrait, this project has evolved into an experimental interpretation of historical events and artworks created by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray between 1912-1926. Interspersed with Man Ray's autobiography are writings from Kathy Acker, Rosalind Krauss, Claude Cahun, Virginia Woolf, and Sara herself.

"In its content and display, this project experiments with ideas of authorship and patriarchal legacies of art history. Historically, authenticity and originality are frequently taken as grounds for the cultural and economic valorization of an art object. During his lifetime, Man Ray’s photography and readymades were often scrutinized because of their engagement with the idea of an infinitely reproducible work. By re-staging these famous artworks and filming them onto 16mm, I am endowing a copy onto a copy. This project asks, however, what happens to the notion of authenticity when a copy is made from the perspective of a historically marginalized experience, such as those who identify as women? And how can historical voices, regardless of gender or representation, collapse an individual viewpoint?”

During her two week Residency, The Millennium Gallery will be open to the public on select  days during select hours. These hours will be a rare opportunity for guests to view the artist at work in-studio and see some of the processes of a working 16mm filmmaker. On July 28 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, Sara will lead a workshop in 16mm Post-Production, where participants will receive direct technical instruction on Steenbeck editing, printing, splicing and other elements of the 16mm post-production workflow. The residency will conclude on August 3rd with a Personal Cinema Screening featuring Sara’s Work-In-Progress cut of The Individual  along with some other recent experimental works.
