About the event
Samkofa 2
On Friday May 3rd, Millennium Film Workshop brings you an encore presentation of Samkofa 2, a series centering Black experimental and non narrative filmmakers. “Samkofa” is a syncretic word taking its name from the Twi concept of Sankofa meaning “to go back and get it” and the vedic concept of Saṃsāra, referring to the never ending cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Together, Samkofa returns to the cyclical return and recurrence of Africanisms and culture within the diaspora and those subjected to enslavement. This screening honors the work of several visionary artists including Jasmine Veronica, Nande Walters, Kariyana Calloway, Zoë Audifferen, Shahkeem Williams, Logan Lynette Burroughs, Kearra Amaya Gopee, Oumou Traore and a special guest.
Samkofa 2 draws upon central themes of Black kinship, community and love. Bell Hooks said “Wisely, Baldwin insisted that we are always more than our pain. Not only did he believe in our capacity to love, he felt black people were uniquely situated to risk loving because we had suffered”. Let’s celebrate us and the greatest force of all, love.
