Pasolini’s Poetic Gaze in Palestine

This program is a dialogue between two films which explore seeing, framing and representing Palestine across time and the colonial difference. Filmed in 1963, Pier Paolo Pasolini's journey to Palestine, initially a search of biblical sites and scenes in preparation for his film The Gospel According to Matthew, becomes a meditation on disillusionment. His camera objectifies, interrogates and ultimately rejects the present in favor of an imagined past. Four decades later in 2004, Ayreen Anastas retraces Pasolini’s journey in Pasolini Pa* Palestine, revisiting his words and route to map a present Palestine through repetition and rupture, the film explores contradictions, continuities and disjunctures that reveal unnoticed possibilities in the original by replicating and dissecting layers of imposed perspectives and narratives.
