About the event

Other Planets | Beyond Observations  is a film program that invites an exploration of sci-fi and absurdist narratives about an eroding identity.

Five months on … the lived reality for Palestinians, especially the ones in Gaza, remains beyond comprehensible as the genocide looms and persists daily.

Can a moment of disassociation ... from leaving this horrid planet be the only way to imagine a place for those so horrifically and explicitly othered on this one?

'In Vitro' by Larissa Sansor is set in an abandoned nuclear reactor under the biblical town of Bethlehem that has been converted into an enormous orchard. Scientists are preparing to replant the soil above using heirloom seeds collected in the final days before the apocalypse. While up in space 'Moonscape,' by Mona Benjamin, takes the form of a music video for a ballad/middle-of-the-road song. The song traces the story of Dennis M. Hope, who claimed ownership of the Moon in 1980 and founded the Lunar Embassy, a company that sells land on a variety of planets and Moons; a connection is made between his story and that of the director, a young Palestinian woman living under the Israeli occupation, longing to end the misery of her people in any way possible. These short black-and-white films explore notions of displacement, nostalgia, and despair in alternative or absurdist realities.

These two films will be screened in a one-off show featuring a video installation, Tech Oasis by architect and digital artist Sami Samawi, composed of  AI-generated animations of Arab Futurism.

Curated by Zeina Abedrabo

This screening is held in collaboration with:

Filmmakers of Color United in Spirit from Columbia University

Millennium Film Workshop, New York City: A non-profit media arts center dedicated to the exhibition, study, and practice of avant-garde and experimental cinema.

Donations:

It’s vital to raise funds ASAP, in the last screening we managed to collect 870

dollars it’s not a colossal amount but much more than what I as an individual can

give at this point, this event will be tickets at 10 dollars with all proceeds from the

bar and sold merch donated to help feed families this Ramadan in Palestine. I am

working with my aunt in Jerusalem to transfer the funds to a reliable source on the

ground.

Feel free to suggest any preferred organizations or individuals to donate too.

Discussion Points:

“HOW CAN WE LEAD THESE DICUSSIONS AND IDEAS FURTHER INTO ACTION”

LEADING DISCUSSION WITH CINEMOVIL – Notions of exploitation and indigenous

uprising appropriated by Hollywood how can artists and filmmakers working within

the experimental arts such as video and animation reframe the use of this genre or

concepts in a way to address a more intimate, clear understanding of displacement

and existence after and during a genocide.

Possible artists Q&A, via zoom Wednesday 27th of March.2024
