About the event
Shahkeem Williams (@ezrom_williams) is a Brooklyn-based experimental documentary filmmaker whose work combines archival interviews, academic research, autobiographical expression, and performance– poetically exploring themes of trauma and healing, labor, and abolitionist activism across generations. His work has been supported by the BRIClab video art residency.
“love in any other time” is a program of 3 short films highlighting a variety of approaches in Williams’ practice, loosely-themed around different dimensions of love. The screening will be accompanied by a gallery showcase of photography by Williams’ collaborator Duane Guaray (@duanegaray).
FILMS:
“Sanctuary” (2020 / 10 Min) examines the turmoil of African-Caribbean mothers who leave their children behind to emigrate to the US.
“(construct) Clearing” (2021 / 26 Min) is a meditation on quiet care, intention, intergenerational movement and labor, seeking to understand how we wear and repeat patterns of silence and separation. Built around the performance of Critical Breaks artist-in-residence Tanika I. Williams, the work speaks to the experience of migration– moving from country to town, across countries, across towns– and examines the pain around the unspoken suffering experienced during the separation of caregiver and their charge.
“T R A C E S O F Y A R R O W” (2023 / 4 Min) meanders through remnants of Downtown Brooklyn’s Underground Road, leaving gifts of yarrow as a tribute to the memory and activism of New York abolitionists. The film calls attention to the enduring work of everyday people advocating for freedom, liberty, and justice for all. TRT: 41 min This program curated by Sage O'Tuama for Millennium Film Workshop.
