Land O Landow: A Land Mark Land Survey O George Land Ow AKA Owen Land’s Own Film and Vide O

George Landow AKA Owen Land (1944 - 2011) was an idiosyncratic artist who rose to prominence among a cohort of structuralist filmmakers. A contemporary of Hollis Frampton, Paul Sharits, Joyce Wieland, Michael Snow and others of that generation, Land(ow) stood both inside and outside the structuralist movement, embodying as much as those others the fascination with film form as content, as well as recognizing the ironies inherent in films making such conspicuous demands on their audience. Land responds to the didacticism of structuralist concepts by fashioning films which at a glance, resemble absurdist educational films.
