July Synesthesia: The personal cinema of Wayne Koestenbaum

July Synesthesia marks the first solo exhibition of moving image work by acclaimed artist, poet, and cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum, revealing a universe of autobiographical cinema as original and luminous as Koestenbaum’s writing.

The gallery features an installation of video monitors surveying Koestenbaum’s stop-motion, self portraits, portraits, and 16mm handmade films— and a display of corresponding sculptural works that Koestenbaum describes as "celluloid pennants," "stop-motion maquettes," and "cyanotype assemblages."

The opening night screening, July 12, focuses on Koestenbaum’s various approaches to diary filmmaking, featuring 19 short works chosen from the 200+ films Koestenbaum has made between 2018 and 2024.
