Experimental Woman: MM Serra

Experimental Woman is a curation of five rarely-seen films by the renowned New York filmmaker and art star, MM Serra. MM has been essential to the landscape of the underground film scene in New York City for several decades. This very special screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist and the curator of this show.

MM Serra is a filmmaker, curator, author, and professor at Parsons at the New School. For 30 years, she was the Executive Director of the Film-Makers' Cooperative, the world's oldest and largest archive of independent film. Serra has created over 31 films, and her first five films were preserved and digitized by Anthology Film Archives. In 2021, her films were screened at various international festivals and venues, including a retrospective entitled MM Serra: Portraits curated by Devon Narine-Singh. Serra has received several awards, including two Kathy Acker Lifetime Achievement Awards. She curated a 60-year online exhibition entitled New York Pavements for the National Gallery of Art. As the Executive Director of Film-Makers' Cooperative since 1993, she has overseen hundreds of restorations of independent media. The curator of this program, Erica Schreiner, is an experimental video and performance artist, based in New York City. She creates allegorical, intimate worlds on VHS video, employing her clearly defined style.

The Millennium Film Workshop was founded in 1966 by a group of filmmakers with a vision to expand accessibility to the tools, ideas, and networks of filmmaking beyond the confines of institutions and corporate studios. Millennium has played a large role in dismantling the monetary and educational barriers separating the art and craft of filmmaking from the general public.
