About the event

"DJCX: How We Got FREER" is a look into the first record label in America for formerly and currently incarcerated musicians; what started as a concept album called Die Jim Crow and became what is now FREER Records. The film follows artist-activist Fury Young in his journey of discovering a lifelong passion in a world he is an outsider to, and an unlikely confidante in BL Shirelle, first an artist and then Co-Director of this groundbreaking label. The documentary, directed by Fury Young and co-written by Young and Shirelle, features dozens of formerly and currently incarcerated musicians from across the country, and of course their music as well!

The documentary will be followed by a selection of the label's music videos curated by Fury Young as well as a Q&A.
