About the event
Millennium Film Workshop is proud to present the latest installment of our long-running Personal CInema Series, this month showcasing the work of interdisciplinary artist M. Lamar. M. Lamar will be presenting the first-ever in-person screening of his 2020 feature film, Deathlessness.
Deathlessness began as a part of Lamar’s 2014 exhibition Negrogothic at Participant, Inc. Drawing from the racially fetishistic BDSM photography of Robert Mapplethorpe, the film takes Mapplethorpe’s perspective as that of a plantation master and answers it through a lens of Black subjectivity and Black becoming. Images of surveillance, punishment and their relation to the Black psyche are positioned as a mourning in the motionless movement of death through slavery, segregation, and neo-segregation, and the film looks at the possibility of being awoken from this deathless dream.
After the film, stay for a discussion with M. Lamar. Short works from Lamar will be also on view in the Millennium Gallery.
This film contains graphic content and may not be suitable for some viewers.
