CAER (CAUGHT) -Nicola Mai

CAER is the result of the collaboration between Nicola Mai and the Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo (CITG), an association defending the rights of trans Latina migrant women in Queens, New York City. The film is first and foremost a tribute to the work and legacy of Lorena Borjas, the mother of Latina trans women living in Queens CAER, was recognised by the city of New York as having ‘amplified the rich and diverse experiences of trans Latina women throughout the five boroughs and beyond’, for ‘strengthening our thriving Latin American and LGBTQ community’ and for ‘inspiring all New Yorkers in your efforts to create a brighter, fairer and more inclusive city’. https://caer-film.org/about/ ABOUT CITG: Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo (CITG) is an organization working on the dissemination of human rights access to comprehensive health care of TransGNB people. By strengthening the social and cultural expression of diverse gender identities in New York City, we aim to  guarantee our well-being and the right to a life free from all types of violence. CITG offers different programs including The Sex Worker 101 Project, Legal AID Network Project, Health & Wellness project, Free Closet project, Trans HIV project and Trans Education Project among other initiatives. https://www.ourvoicesarefree.org/ FILMMAKERS BIO: Nicola Mai is a sociologist, an ethnographer and a filmmaker. His films and academic writing focus on the experiences and representations of migrants working in the sex industry. Drawing on the experiences and understandings of agency and exploitation of migrant sex workers, he challenges prevailing humanitarian representations conflating migrant sex work with trafficking through collaborative ethnographic films and academic publications. This program is curated by Anto Astudillo for Millennium Film Workshop.
