About the event
This Saturday, March 30, Millennium Film Workshop invites you to Cabaret Cinema, an evening of short works from the silent era, presented with live musical accompaniment by some of Brooklyn’s most talented musicians. In the early days of cinema, only high-production, prestigious films would have composed, dedicated scores and more often than not, the music which played behind a film could vary wildly from town to town wherever a film travelled, left largely in the hands of professional accompanists. These accompanists rarely had time to compose full scores, as the films playing in a theater would change from day to day, and they often had to rely on their skills of improvisation, often scoring a film in real time as they laid eyes on it for the first time, experiencing it alongside the audience.
In the spirit of those times, Saturday’s program will feature three short silent classics, with live improvisational scores provided by the likes of Kate Mohanty, Color of Rhythm, and The Doppelgängers respectively. This is a unique opportunity to experience films dating back 100 years in ways they’ve never been seen before, and you won’t want to miss it!
FILMS:
The Doppelgängers scoring The Electric House (Buster Keaton, 1922, 24 min)
Color of Rhythm scoring L'Étoile de Mer (Man Ray, 1928, 15 min)
Kate Mohanty scoring The Peg Entwhistle Story (???? 9 min)
This program was organized by Sean Spada and by Joe Wakeman for Millennium Film Workshop.
